WASHINGTON – The Catholic volleyball team kicked-off the week of Landmark Conference championship action with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-16) sweep of the Goucher Gophers on Tuesday in the DuFour Athletic Center in quarterfinal play.
The Cards secured set one and two with ease, holding GC to six kills and six errors on 35 attempts (.000) in set one and three kills and eight errors on another 35 attempts (-.143) in set two. Nonetheless, Goucher intensified their effort during set three turning a 4-0 CUA lead into a four-point 10-6 Gopher lead.
Catholic regained the lead at the 10-10 mark and endured their final home deficit of the night with score of 15-13, Goucher. CUA rediscovered their opening sets strength, and paced on a 12-2 run to close out the match and advance to the semifinal contest against Susquehanna at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8 in Huntingdon, Pa.
CUA's Mary Paige Nesfeder finished with a double-double with a team-high 14 points and 10 digs, while adding six aces to her effort. Mariana Cruz circulated 29 assists, as Audrey Bizak registered 10 kills and Michelle Bouchard finished with a team-high 13 digs.
The match was the last of the four-year careers for Goucher seniors Megan Chalk, Addie Lanzarotta and Tori Rain. Chalk had six kills, finishing her career second in Goucher program history with 1,339 total, and a team-high 18 digs, while Rain followed with 10 digs.
Hannah Kuehl added six kills for the Gophers, while Michelle Tweedie and Sarah Johnson each assisted on three blocks.
