Vivian Simone scored a goal in the 32nd minute while Emily DiGaetano and the River Hawk defense were able to record a huge shutout as the Susquehanna University Field Hockey team defeated Elizabethtown College 1-0 in a defensive struggle Wednesday afternoon at Wolf Field in Elizabethtown.

The Blue Jays (13-6) were able to register a shot on goal in the 13th minute of action for the first real scoring opportunity of the game, but DiGaetano made the first of several saves to keep Elizabethtown off the board.

The River Hawks (10-8) were able to earn several penalty corners shortly thereafter but were unable to register any shots and the score remained tied through the first 30 minutes of action.

Simone took a penalty corner at the end of the 1st half and quickly ran into the box and received a pass from AJ Smith as she one-timed a shot past the diving Blue Jays goalie and the River Hawks took a 1-0 lead.

The score remained the same after the first half, and the defense stepped up in the second half to cement a 1-0 victory.

The Blue Jays fired eight shots over the final 35 minutes, but DiGaetano sprawled out to make several game saving saves as the team advanced to the Landmark Conference Finals.

The River Hawks are getting hot at the right time, as they have won five of their last six games.

Susquehanna will host the Championship game after No. 4 Scranton pulled off an upset over No. 1 Catholic in the other semi-final game.

The contest is set to begin at 2 p.m. at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.
