TOWSON, Md. – Following last year’s runner-up finish in the Landmark Conference Field Hockey Championship, Catholic University was selected as the favorite in the 2018 conference preseason coaches’ poll, which is voted on by the league’s eight head coaches.
Catholic and third-year head coach Heidi Lewis collected six first-place votes and 68 total points to headline this year’s poll. The Cardinals are in search of its fifth Landmark crown and first since 2015.
The University of Scranton earned 47 points and one-first place vote for second in the poll. 13th-year head coach Colleen Moyer leads the Royals, and returns plenty of talent, including Rookie of the Year Jenna Cyr from last season's squad that opened the season 15-0.
2017 conference champions Juniata College earned the last first-place vote and tied with the 2016 champions Elizabethtown College for the third spot in the poll with 46 points. The Eagles, led by 20th-year head coach Caroline Gillich, welcomes back three key returners this year. Elizabethtown returns a pair of all-conference players in goalie Margo Donlin and defender Renee Grill for ninth-year head coach Brandy Michael.
Susquehanna University finished fifth with 26 points, followed by Goucher College in sixth with 19 points. Moravian College earned 12 points for seventh and Drew University rounded out the poll in eighth with eight points.
The 2018 starts on Friday, August 31 with seven of the eight teams competing.
