2013 Field Hockey Players of the Week

Offensive Player of the Week

Sam Barcia, Drew (So., F, Berlin, N.J.)

Barcia tallied 14 points in two Drew victories this week. In Wednesday's non-conference finale against Muhlenberg, Barcia scored four times for the second time this season. The 19th ranked Rangers clinched the top seed in the Landmark Conference playoffs with a 4-2 win over Juniata on Saturday afternoon. Barcia scored twice and also recorded a pair of assists in the regular season finale. Her second goal was her 27th of the year, tying the field hockey program record set in 1986. She leads the Landmark Conference in goals with 27 and points with 60.

   
Defensive Player of the Week

Krista Mundy, Scranton (Jr., GK, North Caldwell, N.J.)

Mundy made a season-high eight saves to preserve the Royals' 1-0 victory over 20th-ranked Catholic University on Saturday, a win that guaranteed Scranton a spot in the upcoming Landmark Conference tournament. Scranton posted its sixth shutout of the season despite being out-shot 19-5 and trailing 20-3 in penalty corners.

Offensive Player of the Week

Sam Barcia, Drew (So., F, Berlin, N.J.)

Barcia scored with 2:11 left to propel the Rangers to a 5-4 victory over Scranton on Saturday. The sophomore made an incredible diving effort, one-timing a pass in the back of the cage for the eventual game-winner. The goal was her second of the contest and her Landmark Conference leading, 21st of the season. She now has eight game-winning goals this year with three of them coming against Landmark opponents. In Tuesday's 1-0 victory over Richard Stockton she fed Brooke Gagliano in overtime to give the Rangers their 13th win of the year. Her 21 goals this season tie her for the fourth-most in school history.

   
Defensive Player of the Week

Madalyn Dennis, Catholic (So., M/D, Reading, Pa.)

The midfielder turned center back was huge this week leading Catholic to a 2-0 record. The sophomore was instrumental in shutting down the Randolph-Macon attack during the team's 4-0 shutout victory in which the Cardinals allowed only three shots. Dennis then showed her offensive prowess, scoring her first goal of the season with the game-winning goal in a 2-1 Landmark victory over Juniata on Saturday. Dennis and the Cardinals defense held Juniata to just seven shots.

Offensive Player of the Week

Emily Novakovich, Susquehanna (Fr., F, Saratoga, Calif.)

Novakovich scored two game-winning goals this week as Susquehanna defeated Wilkes and Scranton. She notched the second Crusader goal in a 2-1 win over Wilkes in the 17th minute of play on Tuesday and followed up with the game-winner on Saturday in the 46th minute over the Royals.

   
Defensive Player of the Week

Margaret Ruth, Susquehanna (Sr., GK, Lewisberry, Pa.)

Ruth allowed just two goals in 140 minutes in goal as Susquehanna went 2-0 this week. She finished with 19 saves including 15 stops in a 2-1 Landmark win against Scranton. Ruth finished the week with a 1.00 goals against average and .905 save percentage.

Offensive Player of the Week

Sam Barcia, Drew (So., F, Berlin, N.J.)

Barcia added to her Landmark Conference lead in goals and points in a 1-1 week for the 16th-ranked Rangers. She had a goal and an assist in Saturday's 4-0 win over Moravian. The goal was her conference leading, 17th of the season. She scored the team's lone goal in Wednesday's loss to King's. She leads the conference with 36 points on the year.

   
Defensive Player of the Week

Maura Campbell, Catholic (Jr., B/M, Media, Pa.)

Campbell helped Catholic to a 2-0 record this week in Landmark action. She led a defense that recorded two shutouts with a 4-0 win over Goucher and a 3-0 win over Susquehanna. Catholic allowed just 11 shots in the two games. Campbell also helped the attack as she assisted on Catholic's second goal of the game against Susquehanna.

Offensive Player of the Week

Brooke Gagliano, Drew (Sr., F, Freehold, N.J.)

Gagliano helped the 18th-ranked Rangers to a pair of wins this week, keeping the team's record unblemished at 10-0. On Wednesday Gagliano scored a career-high four goals in a 12-1 victory over in-state foe, Ramapo. She followed that up with a goal and an assist in a 3-1 victory over Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon. The senior is second in the Landmark Conference with 12 goals. She now has 44 career goals which is good for seventh all-time on Drew's all-time goals list.

   
Defensive Player of the Week

Taryn Murphy, Drew (So., D, Wilton, Conn.)

The Drew defense yielded only two goals in a pair of wins this week.  Murphy helped the Rangers’ defense allow just 16 shots in the two games. Murphy also contributed on the offensive end in Saturday's 3-1 Landmark win over Susquehanna. She was credited with the game-winning goal, the first goal in her career. The Rangers are allowing a conference-best 0.70 goals per game.

Offensive Player of the Week

Danielle Waleko, Drew (Sr., M, Wainscott, N.Y.)

Waleko had a hand in both goals in Saturday's upset win of No. 13 Catholic. She scored her third goal of the season early in the first half and assisted the game-winner midway through the first overtime. The game-winning assist was the 19th of her career, tying her for 10th all-time on Drew's assist list. Waleko now leads the Landmark Conference with seven assists. The Rangers added a 2-0 win at Union (N.Y.) this week to move to 8-0 this season.

   
Defensive Player of the Week

Shelby Miller, Juniata (Jr., GK, Pottstown, Pa.)

Miller kicked off the week with three saves in 54 minutes of action of an overtime loss to Bridgewater (Va.) on Wednesday. She allowed one goal as the Eagles lost 2-1. Juniata bounced back on Saturday as Miller helped the team give Scranton its first loss this season. She held the Royals scoreless in over 80 minutes of time in the cage and made four saves in the overtime win. Miller finished the week with a 0.52 goals against average and .875 save percentage.

Offensive Player of the Week

Kim Hermann, Catholic (Jr., M, Havertown, Pa.)

Hermann picked up where she left off last week as she scored 20th ranked Catholic’s only goal in a 1-0 upset of No. 3 Salisbury. She added an assist in the Cardinals’ 4-0 win against Misericordia.  Hermann leads the team with four goals on the year.

   
Defensive Player of the Week

Megan Comunale, Catholic (Sr., GK, Hammonton, N.J.)

Comunale helped to guide Catholic to a 2-0 record last week. She registered eight saves and posted a shutout in the team's 1-0 upset over No. 3 Salisbury on Wednesday. On Saturday, Comunale did not allow a goal during 63 minutes of play in Catholic's 4-0 win over Misericordia.

Offensive Player of the Week

Kim Hermann, Catholic (Jr., M, Havertown, Pa.)

Hermann tallied three goals this week as Catholic picked up two wins. She scored the game winning goal just 7:13 into the game against Gettysburg and capped off the scoring with her second goal in the 59th minute as CUA posted the 5-0 victory over the Bullets. On Saturday, Hermann helped her team to a 3-1 upset over No. 14 Rowan as she tallied her third goal of the week in the first two minutes of the second half.

   
Defensive Player of the Week

Megan Comunale, Catholic (Sr., GK, Hammonton, N.J.)

Comunale played every minute in goal for Catholic this past week as the team earned wins over Gettysburg and Rowan. She picked up six saves en route to a 5-0 shutout over Gettysburg. Comunale also registered three saves during a 3-1 victory over No. 14 Rowan.

Offensive Player of the Week

Brooke Gagliano, Drew (Sr., F, Freehold, N.J.)

Gagliano scored three goals in a pair of wins the weekend leading the Rangers to the Bryn Mawr Tournament Championship. She was credited with the game-winner in a 2-0 win over St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday afternoon. She came back on Sunday to score twice, including the game-winner to help the Rangers to a 5-1 victory over Bryn Mawr.

   
Defensive Player of the Week

Margaret Ruth, Susquehanna (Sr., GK, Lewisberry, Pa.)

Ruth started both games this week and gave up just one goal in 140 minutes of action as Susquehanna earned wins over Gwynedd-Mercy and Dickinson. She made 21 saves this including 13 versus Gwynedd-Mercy to wrap up the week with a .955 save percentage.

Offensive Player of the Week

Sam Barcia -  Drew (So., F, Berlin, N.J.)

Barcia had a breakout weekend for the Rangers as they won the program's 20th Drew Fall Festival Title. After scoring twice against Lebanon Valley on Friday, she found the back of the cage four times and also recorded an assist against Swarthmore. Her nine points on Sunday tied a school record and her four goals fell one shy of a school mark. She was credited with both game-winners and now has 13 points on the young season.

   
Defensive Player of the Week

Shelby Miller - Juniata (Jr., G, Pottstown, Pa.)

Miller helped lead Juniata to a 2-0 start this weekend with wins over Wesley and Dickinson. She started the season opener against Wesley and did not allow a goal in 30 minutes while making four saves. In Saturday’s win over Dickinson, Miller played 40 minutes to hold the Red Devils scoreless. She finished with a 0.00 goals against average and collected six saves.
