Catholic Claims Back-to-Back Landmark Field Hockey Titles

WASHINGTON – CUA captured its second straight Landmark Conference championship on Sunday, downing Drew 3-2 inside Cardinal Stadium.  CUA jumped in front 1-0 before the Rangers came back to tie the score, but the Cardinals scored the next two and held on for their second title in as many years.

As it has done the last few games, CUA got on the board quickly in this one, scoring just 4:07 in to take a 1-0 lead.  Hayley Wright netted the goal and Colleen Harwood had the assist.

At the 10:27 mark, CUA was awarded a penalty corner, which led to shots by Maura Campbell and Harwood, but the first went wide and the second was saved by Drew's Christiana Carlini.

Drew pulled even at the 17:11 mark when Bea Cannavale took a pass from Melissa Boyd and found the back of the cage to make it 1-1.

With less than five minutes to play in the half, Drew was awarded three consecutive penalty corners, but the Cardinal defense was up for the challenge, with Megan Comunale stopping three shots and Allison Stevens making a defensive save on the other.

CUA began the second half the same way it began the first, getting a goal from Campbell just 2:45 in to go in front 2-1. Two minutes later, Kim Hermann made it a two-goal spread when she knocked in a pass from Harwood to put the Cards on top 3-1.

At the 48:08 mark, Drew was awarded a penalty stroke, which Brooke Gagliano put into the back of the cage to cut CUA's lead to just one. Just one minute later, Taryn Murphy got off a shot for Drew, but Comunale was there for the save to keep the Cards in front.

At the 57:39 mark, CUA was awarded a penalty corner, which led to a shot by Campbell, but Carlini made the save as the teams headed down the stretch. With two minutes remaining, CUA Head Coach Gia Cillizza called a timeout to settle the Cardinals down, and soon after, CUA was champions once again.

CUA finished with a 20-14 advantage in shots and a 14-8 advantage in penalty corners. Comunale and Carlini both stopped 10 shots in goal.

CUA has now won three consecutive championships, capturing the 2010 ECAC title, and the last two Landmark Conference crowns.

CUA must wait to learn its NCAA Tournament fate, which will be announced on Monday.  The Cardinals advanced to the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament in their debut with a win over Eastern in the first round.
