Royals Get Past Muhlenberg

SCRANTON, Pa. - Junior forward Tara Winter (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) scored her first goal of the season to lift The University of Scranton to a 1-0 victory over Muhlenberg College in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

On a penalty corner in the 26th minute of the first half, Winter positioned herself on the left corner of the cage and tapped in a shot attempt by junior back Beth McLaughlin (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. With the win, Scranton improved to 7-8, while the Mules fell to 8-6.

Junior goalie Deirdre Rocklein (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) stopped six shots to earn her third shutout of the season. Her counterpart, freshman goalie Kristen Dornenburg (Haverford, Pa./Haverford), was credited with a game-high eight saves for Muhlenberg.

The Royals came out of the gates aggressively-building up a 12-6 advantage in shots in the first half-but Dornenburg ended a number of Scranton scoring opportunities by finishing with seven saves.

Muhlenberg's best opportunity to get on the scoreboard came on a penalty corner in the 32nd minute. After a shot by Mule sophomore back Cait Teegarden (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) was blocked, Muhlenberg freshman midfielder Jaclyn Todisco (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) controlled the loose ball and blasted a shot from 12 yards out that was stopped by Rocklein. The ball came to rest in front of the Scranton cage before a Royal defender knocked it away.

The Mules did have an opportunity to tie it up in the closing minutes, but Rocklein made a save on a shot by senior midfielder Tara Cohn (Wayne, Pa./Upper Merion) off of a penalty corner ended the threat.

For the game, the Royals out-shot the Mules, 18-12. Both teams were each awarded five penalty corners.

Scranton's win was its first against Muhlenberg since a 2-1 victory on September 14, 2005.

The Royals will return to Landmark Conference action this Saturday, October 24, against Juniata College at 1:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
