POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - For the third time this season, Drew field
hockey won an overtime game as the Rangers defeated Vassar, 3-2, in
Poughkeepsie. Elizabeth Law scored her second Golden Goal of the
season with a great solo effort three minutes into the extra
period. Drew had rallied from a goal down twice in the contest with
Sarah Charles and Meghan Howlett both equalizing for the Rangers
(11-5). Jessica Lance had a goal and an assist for the Brewers
Jennie McAllister opened the game’s scoring by knocking in Lance’s pass on the left side of the cage just 7:46 into the contest. Drew responded quickly as Sarah Charles netted her seventh of the season just thirty seconds later. Nicole DiBattista did much of the work before picking out Charles on the left side. The first-year crunched home to even the score at 1-1 at 8:17. Charles has been playing very well of late; this is her third straight game with a goal.
After the halftime break, the Brewers jumped out in front again. Lance got clear on a breakaway, cruising down the middle before finishing from just to the right of Lauren Fasano in the Ranger net at 38:58. Again, Drew did not let the Brewers lead from long as 1:34 later it was tied again. This time Meghan Howlett scored off of Kati Eggert’s penalty corner insert. The goal is Howlett’s 12th of the season and knotted the score at 2-2 with 40:32 gone in the game. Regulation time would end at that score despite the Rangers’ advantage in shots 15-6.
Early in overtime, Law ended it. She dribbled through the middle of the Brewer defense before lifting a shot over the keeper’s right should and in for the winner. It is Law’s 11th goal of the season and the 10th game winner of her career.
Drew improves to 11-5 on the season with the win and gets the Rangers moving in the right direction ahead of a key Landmark Conference tussle with Catholic on Saturday.
